Housing Letter Presented to the Board of Supervisors, March 11, 2008

March 11th, 2008

Board of Supervisors
County of Humboldt
825 - 5th Street
Eureka, CA 95501

Re: Affordable Housing and Inclusionary Zoning

Dear Members of the Board of Supervisors,

The League of Women Voters of Humboldt County (LWVHC) supports affordable and equal opportunity housing and wishes to take this opportunity to present you with the following pertinent LWV of California positions in support of this position:

Support action at all levels of government for the provision of affordable housing for all Californians.

Support programs and policies to provide equal opportunity for access to housing without discrimination based on race, color, gender, religion, national origin, age, sexual orientation or disability.

Support standardization and modernization of local building zoning codes to conform with a state code which encourages the use of density bonuses; mixed, cluster, and inclusionary zoning; second units; infill development; and increased density along transportation corridors.

The League of Women Voters encourages you to adopt policies that promote affordable housing; most notably inclusionary zoning. Inclusionary programs are a proven tool in many jurisdictions throughout the State of California for building diverse housing that meets the needs of all of a community’s residents.

Sincerely,

Dr. Sharolyn Hutton, President
Sarah Reid, Natural Resources Director
League of Women Voters of Humboldt County

cc. Kirk Girard, Community Development Director
