March VOTER

Submitted by amandawindsor on March 2, 2010 - 10:13am.

The League is proud to present our 2010 Civic Contribution Awards to Rose Baker, youth advocate, and to the Humboldt Community Breast Health Project. Read more about them in the March VOTER. Also, get an early peek at the six initiatives that made it to the June ballot and the League's positions. The November ballot is going to offer a number of choices to voters, both in the form of initiatives and candidates. Volunteer to help at a candidate forum this election year: your help will be needed. The work isn't difficult, but it is necessary. Join us for a brush-up/intro to candidate forums at the League office on Monday, March 22 at 6 P.M. or leave a message offering to volunteer, 444-9252.

It's in Our Hands

Submitted by amandawindsor on February 6, 2010 - 3:19pm.

Plans for the February membership meeting on the 2010 Census are continuing on track. We are joining with the National League to encourage full participation in the Census. We hope that those who attend the forum will carry Census information back to other community groups to help raise awareness in our area.

Phillip Smith-Hanes, our County Administrative Officer, will be one of the featured speakers. He will describe the importance of full Census participation and tell us how
the Census data benefits local governments. Elaine Dempsey, the local Census Program Specialist, will share information about how the Census will take place locally.
Linda Clark will be coming from the Census regional office in Seattle to speak about the importance of the Census and how the data is used.

There will be an opportunity to ask questions of these experts. Join us from 6-8 P.M. on Thursday, February 25 at The First Congregational Church, 900 Hodgson Street in Eureka. Invite your family, friends, and neighbors and encourage them to be counted!

The next interview in the Making Connections series is with the County Administrative Officer, Phillip Smith-Hanes. He discusses pressing issues at state and local levels with our president, Dr. Sharolyn Hutton. The June election will be a big one for Humboldt voters. All eight of the executive officers are up for election, as well as two supervisors and two judges. This means candidate forums and lots of them. Find out how you can get involved, have fun, and help make this key voter service activity happen.

The November VOTER

Submitted by amandawindsor on October 30, 2009 - 7:48pm.

Halloween is nearly past, the candidate forums are done, and the election
will soon be over, but this VOTER marks a beginning: a new interview
series. During the coming months, the LWVHC will interview local public
officials with questions of importance to the League and to our community. Our first interview is with Supervisor Jimmy Smith, Chair of the Humboldt County Board of Supervisors.

Voter Service Co-Director Nan Nieboer attended a LWVC Regional Workshop
hosted by the Sacramento County LWV and shares what she learned. Read
about it all in the November VOTER, and of course, don't forget to VOTE on November 3 if you haven't already.
