Mission & Vision

Mission Plicy

The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.

Vision

The goal of the League of Women Voters is to empower citizens to shape better communities worldwide. To builds citizen participation in the democratic process we engages communities in promoting positive solutions to public policy issues through education and advocacy.

We believe in:

  • respect for individuals
  • the value of diversity
  • the empowerment of the grassroots, both within the League and in communities

We will:

  • act with trust, integrity and professionalism
  • operate in an open and effective manner to meet the needs of those we serve, both members and the public
  • take the initiative in seeking diversity in membership
  • acknowledge our heritage as we seek our path to the future.

Nonpartisanship

The League of Women Voters of Humboldt County (LWVHC) shall not support or oppose any political party or candidate.

A Board member shall not run for or hold an elective position nor speak in public against a League position.

The President, the Voter Service Director, the Public Relations Chair and the Action Directors shall not take an active, visible role in, or make a financial contribution to, any political candidates' campaign, or to any political party. They are not allowed to attend any fundraising function of any individual candidate.

Other Board members shall not undertake any action which will cause them to be identified publicly as supporting any candidate for elective office or any political party. They may attend political, but not partisan functions. They may make donations to candidates, providing their names are not published as contributors or endorsers.

The political activities of a spouse or relative of a Board member are to be considered as separate and distinct from the activities of a Board member.

A person resigning from the Board for political reasons will have to remain off the Board for at least three months following that political activity.

Questions about specific situations should be presented to the full Board for interpretation and resolution.

Diversity Policy

The League of Women Voters of Humboldt County (LWVHC) recognizes that diverse perspectives are important and necessary for responsible and representative decision-making. Not only shall there be no barriers to membership and participation in the LWVHC on the basis of gender, race, creed, age, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, economic status, nor political affiliation, but also the LWVHC will actively seek to reflect the diversity of the community in its membership, board and programs.
